It’s all about context. Synonyms aren’t interchangeable all the time. I only offer examples of gender-neutral alternatives, you can pick and choose which word you use.

“Spécialiste” is indeed gender‑neutral — but it is not a synonym for “expert”.
– Expert implies a high level of mastery, often formally recognised.
– Spécialiste simply means someone who works in a particular field.
You can be a spécialiste without being an expert.
Replacing one with the other dilutes the meaning and erases a level of competence.

I’ll leave it at that. I favour inclusive language, but not at the cost of accuracy of meaning.
